Coates is a national correspondent for the Atlantic, primarily focusing on how race is lived in the U.S. today. He has also written for The Village Voice and is a contributor to Time, The Washington Post, and The New York Times Magazine. He was awarded the Hillman Prize for Opinion and Analysis Journalism in 2012.
