We invite the entire community to join us for Breakfast and an Adult Education class on Sunday, March 4th at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 for children under 13. For more information or to make reservations by Thursday, March 1, contact at 518-584-2370 or saratogajcc@albany.twcbc.com. Led by Rabbi Kenneth Blatt, this is the 3rd of a 3-part series titled “The Jews and First World War - The Aftermath”. The discussion will focus on the worst conflict in the history of mankind that not only decimated the population of young men in all of the warring armies of Europe, but it was the first time that so many civilians were also killed, wounded and displaced. With the breakup of great empires (German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman), broken economies in much of continental Europe, and unprecedented loss of life, the Jews of Europe participated and suffered fully in every aspect of the war. And, when it was finally over in 1918, the signing of the Armistice did not signal the end of the suffering for the Jews. The governments of the defeated Central Powers looked for someone or something to assign blame and once again the common scapegoat was the Jews. What followed was a series of events that ultimately contributed to the Holocaust.
