13th Annual Hudson Crossing Park Cardboard Boat Race

13TH ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACE Schuylerville, New York — Hudson Crossing Park presents its 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 12, 2017 (rain date Sunday, August 13, 2017) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylerville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “The Erie Canal, We Dig It!” celebrating the bicentennial of the Erie Canal that was started on July 4, 1817. A project said to be impossible at the time, its success changed the state’s economy forever. The first race launches at 1pm and best photo opportunities are between noon and 2 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. On-site registration and cardboard boat construction is open from 8 to 11 a.m. Rules, registration forms and hints to get started with boat building is available at http://www.hudsoncrossingpark.org. Race participants will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100% recycled materials, that will hold at least one crew member and be “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct their boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event where materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee. During race preparations, there will be food, live music, and lots of creativity. Environmental education activities, canal trivia and terrific photo opportunities will round out a fun-filled day for all. Individuals, families, groups, businesses and school teams are all encouraged to race. Hudson Crossing is an evolving bi-county educational park centered on and near the Champlain Canal Lock 5 Island of the Hudson River.
